Great Big Sea's Alan Doyle smiles on 'Fortune's Favor'

The members of Great Big Sea [ ] feel fortunate to been able to make a living translating the traditional folk songs of their region--the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador--into stone numbers. It's a sentiment the chemical group expresses in the deed of conveyance of its latest record album "Fortune's Favor."

"The title comes from one of the songs, 'England,'" lead singer Alan Doyle said during a phone interview from his Newfoundland home. "It's basically an expression of luck. We feel rosy to be able to do this for a decade and a half. A lot of the songs that are on the record kind of express our contentment and our general acknowledgment of good fortune.

"We've done our share of work, just a lot of bands that have worked strong, for whatsoever reason, have collapsed under its own weight for one reason or some other. We've been lucky to have fans who have supported us for such a long time."

Fans throughout the United States will be able to see Great Big Sea on its major US go, which kicks off tonight. For the itinerary, go through below.

"It's been steadily growing for a x or so that we've been playing there," Doyle said virtually US audiences. "Everywhere we've played, it's always grown steadily. The momentum of it has been identical rewarding, to be honest. The last tour that we did for the last record was the first time the US passed Canada in ticket sales and stuff so it's very, very electrifying and very exciting."

In concert, Great Big Sea plays a "mixed udder" of hits and deep cuts, changing its go down list every night.

"We're not a band that has a pile of choreography or loops," Doyle said. "We have an interactive kind of night. The custom of music here at Newfoundland where we're from is very inclusive. It's not care a recital where you envy a virtuoso. It's more like the charles Herbert Best singer is the guy wire who gets the most people to sing along. The best accordion player is the guy world Health Organization fills the dance floor the most often. Music is around a solemnization and fashioning it a great night."

Longoria's husband sues celeb site

The husband of 'Desperate Housewives' star Eva Longoria, Tony Parker, is suing a celebrity gossip website for at least $40m over allegations that he had an affair with a French model.
The Associated Press reports that basketball star Parker alleges the site X17online posted "false and defamatory" messages about him.
The lawsuit said: "This is false. It never happened. And X17 had to know that the story was false, or, at the very least, it had to have entertained serious doubts about the credibility of its supposed source."
The lawsuit also said that the website never contacted the couple or their representatives before publishing the allegations, and refused to retract them after being told the allegations were false.

John Lennon - Ono Loses Imagine Case

JOHN LENNON's widow YOKO ONO has lost her legal bid to sue a filmmaker for using the former BEATLE's hit track IMAGINE without permission.

Ono and Lennon's two sons Sean and Julian joined publisher EMI Blackwood Music Inc to launch legal action against the filmmakers of Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.

In a lawsuit filed at U.S. District Court in Manhattan, New York in April (08), Ono demanded Premise Media Corporation, C+S Production LP and Rocky Mountain Pictures ban the track in its movie.

They also sought unspecified damages.

But on Monday (2Jun08), U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein found in favour of the filmmakers based on a "fair use" doctrine.

Stein ruled: "That doctrine provides that the fair use of a copyrighted work for purposes of criticism and commentary is not an infringement of copyright."

Jolie heads 2007 humanitarian poll

Angelina Jolie has topped a Reuters poll of the best celebrity humanitarians of 2007.
The poll of 606 people by humanitarian web site Reuters AlertNet put the 32-year-old star ahead of U2 singer Bono, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
Jolie works as a UN goodwill ambassador and has tried to raise awareness of the problems facing Africa.
Peter Walker, Director of the Feinstein International Famine Center at Tufts University in the US, said: "Someone like Angelina Jolie comes across as having more integrity than some celebrities and a greater sense that she doesn't just do this for the publicity."
Commenting on Jolie's work for UNHCR, UNHCR spokesman Peter Kessler said: "She does this in a very low-key way. She goes out to see for herself, to get up close and very personal. She doesn't travel with film crews, and I think that is real testimony to her dedication to the cause."
While Bono ranked second behind Jolie, he also had enough negative votes to feature in the top five least-liked humanitarians - along with Bob Geldof.

Spielberg leaves his Olympics post

Oscar-winning film director Steven Spielberg has said he is withdrawing as an artistic advisor to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing because of the Chinese government's policy towards its ally Sudan and the conflict in Darfur.
In a statement, Spielberg said the Sudanese government shouldered the bulk of responsibility for the crimes in Darfur, but said China should be doing more to end the human suffering there.
Actress Mia Farrow, who had been pressing the director to end his involvement with this year's games, said his decision sent the right sort of message to Beijing.
A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington is quoted in the New York Times as saying that the Darfur issue was neither an internal issue for China nor was it caused by China.
The spokesman is also quoted as saying that it was completely unreasonable, irresponsible and unfair to link the two as one.

Edith Bowman reveals pregnancy danger

Pregnant DJ Edith Bowman has revealed that giving birth could put her life at risk, because she is suffering from a serious heart defect.
The 33-year-old star, who is five months pregnant with her first baby, told the Evening Standard that she has a bicuspid aortic valve, which increases her chances of dying in childbirth.
The DJ said that she will require a Caesarean section and that doctors must monitor her closely throughout her pregnancy.
Bowman said: "We get to find out the baby's sex later this month but I'm like, 'there are really more important things to worry about right now than the colour of baby clothes'."
"Basically I need these extra scans early in the pregnancy and I'll have to have a Caesarean because no-one - including my heart specialist - sees the point in putting my heart through unnecessary stress."
Bowman was diagnosed with the condition in summer 2004 after suffering palpitations and tiredness while working at the Glastonbury Festival.
She said: "It was shocking, obviously. But once you get your head around it, you realise there's nothing you can do except try and get on with life."
"I was told that the greatest risk is deterioration and that I may need a valve transplant later on, which is scary. But for now, it seems fine."

music is at risk of disappearing in a common hard drive crash," commented
Michael Robertson, CEO of MP3tunes. "With AutoSync, you don't have to worry
about the laborious process of transferring your music from one PC to
another -- it instantly happens, with no extra steps to take or
applications to launch. But the PC is only the beginning. AutoSync for
popular mobile devices is up next, and we look forward to rolling out
AutoSync for your car's audio system by the end of this year."
